There’s plenty to see and do in Shropshire – and the best way to see as much as possible is by bicycle. Shropshire cyclist Dave Hancock has compiled a selection of cycle rides of varying length, graded from easy rides for families to day-long trips for the more energetic. Highlights include: Shrewsbury, birthplace of Charles Darwin; the miniature Lakeland of meres and mosses around Ellesmere – with otters, dormice, hares, bats, dragonflies and waterfowl; hillforts from the Iron Age; Offa’s Dyke built by King Offa in the 8th century, the longest archaeological monument in Britain; Whittington Castle and Bishop’s Castle, and much more! Directions and instructions are presented in easy-to-follow table form with mileages between key points and details of signs, junctions and turnings, plus easily understood symbols and explanatory narrative.
