THE Cheshire Ring is the second in the series, written by Sally Bailey, covering the county with this volume looking at circular
canal side walks on the eastern side of Cheshire.
The book covers some 20 walks, each of which is named after the section of canal it follows, and range between just under three to six-and-a-half miles each.
The idea of the book is to allow you to walk these routes in any order with none of them being overly strenuous, but with each taking in a section of canal and the
countryside it passes through.
Each walk covered has its own numbered section beginning with details of the start point, length of the walk and the time needed to undertake it.
There are also details of the OS map you might want to look at and information as to how you can get there by car.
There then follows a number of clear and informative maps each highlighting places of interest which are covered in more detail in the numbered paragraphs that are included in each section.
A number of photographs also help to illustrate the sections in question and highlight points of particular interest. These points are not always waterways linked but include items of more general interest including National Trust properties and geographic features. The book also highlights local pubs that not only provide navigational reference
points but also handy rest stops along the way.
Having long been an advocate of people exploring the wider areas surrounding the waterways, especially when it brings you into closer contact with the wildlife of the area, this book is of particular interest to me. The maps are clear, and the good use of illustrative photographs makes the book entertaining even if you are not walking the areas mentioned.
We are all being encouraged to get more active so it’s good to find a book that could provide the motivation needed to explore the areas around this particular section of the waterways. This edition, together with its companion, provides you with a guide to the entire 97 miles of the Cheshire Ring. So for anyone wanting to learn more about this area these books should be worthy of serious consideration.
